Best Over the Counter Sleeping Pills

Kirkland Sleep Aid vs Unisom Sleep Gels vs Natrol Melatonin

Number 1 – Kirkland Sleep Aid

Kirkland Sleep Aid sleeping tablets are generally considered to be the most powerful, effective and best over the counter sleeping pills.  Their effectiveness is not in doubt.

The active ingredient in Kirkland Sleep Aid is doxylamine succinate, an antihistamine. It is a substance used to treat allergies but also works to induce sleep and help people stay asleep. In fact, doxylamine works more effectively to help those with insomnia than those suffering from allergies.

Sleep Aid is generally considered the strongest, most potent sleeping tablet, in the antihistamine class of sleeping pills.  According to Ethan Green, over at nosleeplessnights.com, “In the anti-histamine category, Kirkland Signature is one of the most powerful and effective sleep aids you’ll find. And for me, it was the strongest overall of all the sleep aids I’ve tried.  The active ingredient is Doxylamine Succinate, which has a particularly strong sedative effect.”

The number one, non-prescription sleeping tablet!  Just one pills, 30 minutes before bedtime and you’ll be drifting off to sleep!  It works all night too!

Number 2 – Unisom Sleep Gels

Unisom Sleep Gels are one of the more well known over the counter sleeping pills.  Like Kirkland Sleep Aid, they are an anti-histamine, but the active ingredient is different. Sleep Aid uses ‘doxylamine succinate, and Unisom relies on Diphenhydramine hydrochloride.  While side effects are also rare, the most common complaint about Diphenhydramine is a noticeable increase in the viscosity (thickness) of lung secretions.  That doesn’t sound too nice.

Unpleaseant secretions aside, the sleeping effect of Unisom is greatly more gentle than the effect of the Kirkland product. In other words, it doesn’t work as well.  You’re less likely to get a full night’s sleep.

It is also important to mention that, it is found, many people develop a tolerance to Diphenhydramine hydrochloride.  And that tolerance is developed really quite quickly.  That would mean prolonged use is not likely to be effective.

Number 3 – Natrol Melatonin

For some people, the more natural, the better. Melatonin is not an anti-histamine product like the other two. Instead, it relies on melatonin to help bring about sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that naturally occurs in the human body. Normally, it’s a product of the pineal gland, and it helps to regulate sleep and wake cycles.

We like ‘natural’, no doubt, but more importantly, we want to get to sleep.  Melatonin is a significantly less potent treatment, so while you may be happier with the ‘naturalness’ of the product, any sleep you do get will most likely be psychosomatic.
